Joe's Apartment

Creepy Crawly Number 3 - The Cockroach (that sings and dances?)

Joe's Apartment

* The creepy crawly up for show; Cockroaches. Not just any kind, but New York Roaches. And not just your average New York bugs, but Singing and Dancing Cockroaches. Huh? That’s the main attraction of this funny film, which was a perfect product of its time and origin; the 90’s meets MTV.

* How they are portrayed in this film; The special effects are not the highlight of the film. Obviously “Joe’s Apartment” had a low budget, as it was MTV’s first feature film. It was a complete experiment from the very beginning; loser guy moves to New York hoping to make it big. The only apartment he can afford is a dilapidated room in a derelict apartment building. And with the landlords from hell trying to get rid of him out, that in fact is the least of his problems. Joe soon discovers his new home is owned by thousands of cockroaches who don’t only talk to him but sing and dance.

* The humans who try to squash them; Joe’s reaction at first is wierded out, then discovers the roaches are his allies in fighting off the landlord who wants to kick him out, knock down the building and build a prison. And as hapless and hopeless as Joe is, he would easily give in, but the musical cockroaches don’t want to move. As they team up to fight off the bad guys, every moment is a chance for the bugs to break out into song and dance. Their little musical numbers are funny, clever and catchy.

* The grossest moment; there’s no gross moments in the film as it’s a comedy, but there are some icky, squishy moments where the roaches rummage through leftover food. Given the budget is so low – and this was the 90’s – most of the effects are stop motion or very dodgy CGI. You can overlook it and just enjoy the film for it’s sporadic laugh’s and good-natured attitude. Then you’ll forget about it right after! Enjoy.
